The Beach Company, which developed Main & Stone, and Southridge Apartments, has unveiled plans to turn the existing BB&T Building at 301 College Street, into an Apartment Complex. There are also plans to build a 30,000 sq. ft. Grocery Store in the land across Buncombe Street, where the bank’s drive thru currently resides.

It will be interesting to see how they rehab the building, which has a somewhat brutalist design, with large facades of pure brick. Not sure if they can add additional windows and balconies.

The downtown area is relatively light on grocery stores, with the publix on mcbee the only one operating centrally to the downtown area, but a Harris Teeter is slated for the Northpointe Development at Stone Avenue near the intersection with Wade Hampton. There was a small bi-lo at the corner of main and park avenue that shut down years ago. Many in the North Main neighborhood now use the Publix on Mcbee or the Ingles at Cherrydale point for groceries.

The developer plans to break ground on the project in the spring. Many more details available at Upstate Business Journal.
