Jersey Bagel Brothers opened quietly a few weeks ago, but the shop has been getting raving reviews.  In an unassuming location at 1340 N. Pleasantburg Drive, the shop is serving real New Jersey bagels and breakfast sandwich favorites with ham, bacon, sausage and Taylor Ham. In addition, Jersey Bagel Brothers also offers other NY/NJ favorites like Flagels and Bialys.

Just as they are learning how to assimilate into our Southern culture, we have to admit that we’re having to do a little research on what some of these New Jersey favorites are too!

What is Taylor Ham?

Taylor Pork Roll (regionally called Taylor Ham) is a brand of pork roll produced by Taylor Provisions Company. The company is headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey and its founder is credited as the inventor of the pork roll. While “Taylor” is a brand of pork roll, in regions of North Jersey all brands of pork roll may be referred to as “Taylor Ham” due to the first production of pork roll being branded Taylor.

This is similar to the way we call all “sodas” a Coke.

Flagel = Flat Bagel

A flagel is a bagel that’s flattened before it goes into the oven and is a little bit crunchier than the regular style.

Bialys

The bialy is round with a depressed middle that can be filled with cooked onions and sometimes poppy seeds. Its outside is matte, not shiny, and its insides are characterized by large puffy bubbles. Though it can be slathered with butter or cream cheese, purists prefer them straight up.

Jersey Bagel Brothers is open for breakfast seven days a week and has a 5-star review on Facebook.  It seems like a great place for Northerners to get an authentic taste of bagels back home and for Southerners to try something new!
